Luceplan celebrates the 10th anniversary of Compendium, the iconic lamp designed by Daniel Rybakken
Compendium, designed by Daniel Rybakken, reaches its 10th year, and Luceplan celebrates this achievement by retracing the story of its creation, which sums up the distinctive characteristics of the poetic and functional research conducted on the theme of light by the Norwegian designer. On its 10th anniversary, Compendium, the lamp designed by Daniel Rybakken for Luceplan, confirms its status as one of the company’s bestsellers, continuing to generate luminous scenarios of great visual impact.
Various projects around the world, ranging from residential to contract, highlight the multiple qualities of the product. Whether it is an office, a hotel lounge, a restaurant, or a private residence, Compendium integrates perfectly into any environment, offering great versatility in use. This is confirmed by some of the most significant references, such as the offices of Novo Nordics and Netcompany in Denmark, the headquarters of Sponda in Finland, the Vapiano restaurant in Kassel, Germany, or Tower Ten in Manila, Philippines.
“How can you bring optimal lighting to a room with just one source? To start with, of course, it is best to for the light to be very strong. Second, it should arrive sideways, like the warm, natural light that enters through a window and invades the space, producing a sensation of wellbeing. Third, once we have this powerful light source, it is necessary to prevent glare, to make the light soft and spreading. These are the three most important factors in the design of Compendium.”
The Norwegian designer Daniel Rybakken provided these clear and apparently simple directives ten years ago, when he presented Compendium to Luceplan, a lamp of striking graphic-sculptural character and yet another case bearing out the fertile and renowned collaboration between the company and the designer. In the floor version, Compendium brings diffused light into the room: the body contains a high-efficiency LED light source, and rotates freely on the base to aim the light towards the wall, preventing direct glare. The suspension version, on the other hand, can be used for both direct and indirect lighting, by rotating the reflector at the moment of the installation.
Over the years the Luceplan catalogue has welcomed various other versions, demonstrating the exceptional potential of this product. Starting with the essential Compendium Circle, installed to permit direct emission if aimed downward, or diffused light when the beam is aimed upward. Then comes Compendium Plate, in ceiling, applique and suspension models, whose outer profile conserves the slimness of the original project, creating a surface that is almost coplanar with the wall. Ten years after its creation, and in its multiple translations and various finishes (black, brass and aluminium), Compendium continues to offer all settings luminous scenarios of great visual impact.
