Grace, a small rechargeable lamp made of marble

Design Francesco Giannattasio for Lumere

“The project was born from the strong passion for marble, a passion that has its roots in a family tradition, indeed, a part of my family has been working with marble for several generations. I remember when I was a very young boy wandering around the factory among huge slabs and lifts. I was astonished by the craftsmanship accomplished by expert hands, and can still feel the acrid smell of mastic in my nostrils. What strikes me most about this material is its relationship with history and time: I enjoy thinking that each slab has preserved its memory through the stratigraphy of the years. My task is to bring out what is already within the memory. My lamps are born from this strong relationship with the material; the challenge is to diffuse the light through a traditionally opaque material”. That is how Francesco Giannattasio, architect and designer, explains.

The absolute protagonist of this lamp is, as mentioned, the material, its shape and its essence. With its peculiar retro taste, Grace by Lumere is composed of two marble elements – the base and the diffuser – joined by a delicately flared stem. The diffuser loses its traditional value of transparency and transforms into a sort of opaque projector that transmits light to the base through an LED source. The project stems from a strong passion for marble from a designer’s family tradition.
Grace is available in black and white and is 29 cm tall.
