How to light an office: visual comfort and efficiency

One aspect that is often underestimated in offices is lighting. Not natural light filtering through windows, but lighting designed and developed to optimize visual efficiency and operational comfort. Proper lighting design in office spaces is not just an aesthetic choice, but a determining factor for daily well-being and productivity.

LUX and UGR: essential parameters for visual comfort

There are two fundamental parameters to consider when designing lighting for office spaces, Lux and UGR (Unified Glare Rating).

Lux measures the light intensity reaching a given surface. A well-designed office must guarantee the levels of illumination required by regulations, between 300 and 500 lux on desks, to allow clear and comfortable vision.

UGR measures the perceived level of glare. For office spaces, a value below 19 is essential to prevent visual fatigue and ensure comfort over time. The UGR value does not depend solely on the characteristics of the individual luminaire: it is a relative measure, influenced by the ratio between the luminance of the light source and that of the surrounding environment. The quality of light is therefore not just a question of power, but of balance and distribution. Uniform light distribution, achieved with multiple light sources that also illuminate walls and ceilings, reduces contrasts, improves visual adaptation and enhances the perceived quality of the environment.

The project before the product

Even the best lighting fixture can produce disappointing results if used without a coherent design. The effectiveness of lighting is not measured solely in terms of technology or design, but in its ability to integrate with the geometry of the space, the layout of the workstations and the presence of natural light. An effective lighting design stems from the right combination of elements: the choice of suitable fixtures, the definition of a strategic layout and attention to every detail.

Office lighting is not just a technical issue, but a design choice that affects comfort and work efficiency. Proper management of intensity, direction, colour temperature and light distribution improves productivity, reduces visual fatigue and supports user well-being. In this way, light is no longer simply an operational element but becomes a determining factor in the overall quality of the workspace.

Every office is different. Size, layout, functions, and brand identity all demand specific solutions. That’s why Egoluce offers the ability to create fully customized lighting systems designed to meet any project requirement.
