We met Paolo Fumagalli during the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition), at his stand in the prestigious Aurora Hall

So, Architect, here we are in Hong Kong once again!

Definitely, Hong Kong International Lighting Fair is one of the several international fairs that – with Light+Building Frankfurt and Euroluce Milano – hosts us as key players. We have been exhibiting here for 21 years, in this privileged showcase, to gain significant visibility throughout the Far East.

Your company is increasingly international, extensively selling worldwide. Are you currently producing only in Italy, or have you set up operations elsewhere?

Since 1973, we have been producing outdoor lighting fixtures made of resin and composite materials such as steel, resin, and polyurethane. We continue to produce in Italy and export our products through a nearly 200-distributor network on 5 continents.

In order to better meet the demands arising from an increasingly international market, we have expanded our headquarters over the years with a strong investment in the operational warehouses of the factory, warehouse and offices, without forgetting human resources. A substantial growth that 3 years ago earned us the title of “Italy’s Export Champions 2022”, placing Fumagalli in 7th place in a ranking of the top 200 Italian companies with the largest export shares, with a 97% turnover gained abroad. The ranking, aimed at enhancing the Made-in-Italy, results from an analysis of over 9,000 companies. This prestigious prize was awarded by Statista GmbH (a central German research institute managing corporate data analysis), in collaboration with Il Sole 24 Ore.

Noteworthy is that our company is the only lighting manufacturer appearing in that ranking.

But let us focus on your participation this year, at the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition). In addition to your poles with renowned FUMATECH technology, have you showcased any new lighting fixtures or further innovations? 

As you know, FUMATECH technology guarantees that our lamps have the same metal pole solidity features, with all the benefits that only resin can offer in terms of rust and corrosion resistance. But this year we also brought the latest additions to a family of Garden lanterns in style “Garden Revival” that can be installed on the pole, base, wall arm for the applique version and chain for the suspension. Available in white, black and grey, these are square and hexagonal lanterns in three sizes, small, medium and large. The diffuser is made of transparent and opal methacrylate, while the LED bulb with an E27 base offers the option of adjusting the colour temperature from 2700° to 4000°K. As usual, the lamp body is made of techno polymer suitable for outdoor use, IP 55.

What are the strengths that have allowed Fumagalli to achieve these important international goals and compete, among a few European companies, in territories where the Chinese giants rule?

For years, with my siblings Chiara and Emmanuele and a fantastic team, we have been carrying on our father’s extraordinary intuition, which has allowed Fumagalli to evolve, creating an ingenious outdoor lamps production process. After years of experimentation and the laborious development of suitable equipment, our devices are distributed and appreciated worldwide. We analyse each fixture in-house, from design to production, through product engineering and prototype conception using the most advanced technological tools. Thanks to the new workstations dedicated exclusively to mould making, we can update our collections with new products and stay up-to-date with the most advanced lighting solutions. Definitely, the mould production inside the factory allows our appliances full quality control in all their details.
