Outdoor Lighting

2 September 2025

Welcoming guests on the terrace, reading under a pergola or returning home along an illuminated driveway: for Egoluce a well-thought-out project and durable materials guarantee beauty and safety in every season

Outdoor lighting is more than just installing a few light points around the house; it is a real art, capable of combining safety, functionality, and atmosphere in the garden, patio or poolside corner. When carefully designed, proper light can transform any outdoor space into a lovely extension of the living area: a cosy evening lounge, an atmospheric backdrop for alfresco dining, or a delicately lit path leading home.

Egoluce wants to explore design ideas for every corner of the outdoor area, also focusing on how atmospheric agents, especially humidity, salt and sunlight, influence the choice of materials and lighting fixtures that are most suitable for lasting over time.

Light and Landscape: creating atmosphere

Imagine going out on the terrace at dusk. Points of warm light outline the perimeter of the relaxation area, while light from below caresses a magnolia in bloom, enhancing its shapes and creating interesting plays of light. A little further on, spotlights embedded in the floor trace the garden path and, in the distance, the poolside shines with discreet LED spots. This harmony of light and shadow is at the heart of a good outdoor lighting project: it invites you to explore, enhances key elements and makes every corner safe without sacrificing charm.

When planning, you need to divide the areas of use:

  • Circulation areas, such as stairs or driveways, require glare-free lighting to ensure safety. Recessed spotlights or low bollards are the perfect solutions.
  • Functional areas, such as outdoor kitchens, dining nooks or lounge areas, require a mix of technical/context lighting: pendant lights under a pergola, adjustable spotlights or low-profile LED strips are ideal.
  • Vegetation and architectural details, such as palm trees, shrubs, trees, fountains or textured walls, shine with accent light from below or with concealed luminaires that enhance their textures and shapes.

Rather than randomly distributing light points, you should think of the lamps as a grand narrative: a warm beam on a material wall evokes romance; A blade of cold light on a log suggests theatricality. Combining colour temperatures and beam angles helps create depth, just as a painter would with highlights and shadows.

Outdoor luminaires face harsh conditions: rain, UV rays, pollen, and even curious animals. In addition to aesthetics, the installation duration depends on the choice of materials and the degree of protection (IP).

  • 316L stainless steel and marine-grade brass are ideal in coastal environments, where salt will quickly corrode lower materials. These metals naturally resist chlorides and moisture.
  • “Marine grade” painting is a type of surface treatment designed to protect materials (usually metal or wood) from weathering, and chemical and UV rays in marine or highly corrosive environments. Marine-grade paint can last for years without needing any touch-ups.
  • Aluminium anodization is an electrochemical treatment to form a protective layer of aluminium oxide on the surface of the metal, making it more resistant to corrosion, wear, scratches, and weathering. If we talk of about 20-micron anodizing, we refer to a specifically designed process to offer durable protection in outdoor environments, including the most difficult ones such as coastal areas.

Anodized aluminium can be coloured and retains its appearance for a long time.

  • UV-stabilised polycarbonate or ASA plastic is the right choice in the hot sun: it does not become yellow or crack over time.

Important: Always check the IP code. The first digit (4–6) indicates protection against solid bodies, and the second (4–8) indicates protection against liquids. Covered awnings can use IP44 luminaires, but for pool edges or exposed walls, users need at least IP65.

When the following elements come into play:

Moisture and condensation: Even without rain, humid air can condense inside the appliances, corroding metal parts and promoting mould. Gardens in tropical style or near the sea should Favor sealed fixtures with high IP and provide for periodic inspections to detect fogging.

Salt and coastal environments: Living near the sea means exposing surfaces to abrasive salt dust. In these cases, only AISI 316L stainless steel or solid brass can guarantee durability. Powder-coated alloys do not last long.

Sun and UV rays: Intense sunlight can damage low-quality materials. For outdoors choose UV-stabilized materials and tempered glass lenses, avoiding non-certified ABS or PVC.

Temperature range: Scorching days and freezing nights can put a strain on lamp components. Heat can overload the LED drivers, and cold can stiffen the seals. Check the operating temperatures indicated by the manufacturer and prefer aluminium bodies that also act as heat sinks.

Designing for special environments

Poolside and spa: lighting around the pool should be stylish, safe, and resistant to harsh conditions. Egoluce spotlights in AISI 316L stainless steel are perfect for humid, saline or chlorine environments, thanks to their exceptional resistance to corrosion. With IP65 protection, they are ideal for driveways and poolsides, offering reliable performance and a relaxing atmosphere.

Pergolas and verandas: Covered spaces such as pergolas and verandas require solutions that combine visual comfort and resistance. Egoluce lamps, made with UV-stabilized materials and IP65 protection, resist humidity, wind and sun exposure. Compact pendants, recessed ceiling luminaires and discreet wall lights allow you to create layered and welcoming lighting, without oscillating or discolouring over time.

Garden boundaries and hedges: Illuminating garden boundaries or the inside of hedges gives depth and structure to the space. Egoluce spotlights integrate perfectly into the greenery, offering a precise and evocative light. With weatherproof materials and IP65 protection, they are able to cope with humidity, irrigation and seasonal changes, transforming hedges into light scenes.

Outdoor lighting should look natural, almost invisible—but its magic comes from the details: the quality of a seal, the finish of metal, the play of light on the foliage. Understanding how humidity, salt, sun and extreme temperatures affect materials allows you to combine function and emotion.
