Founded in 1924 in Gravellona Toce, Italy, on the Maggiore Lake shores, the company is now led by brothers Thomas and Davide Clerici, the third generation of a family that made hinges production its vocation. The distinctive feature of Cernierificio Valtoce is the custom-made production Division, which rises 30% of turnover and the most significant share of company margins. “Wherever there is a door or a mobile element, a hinge often has to have very special features,” explains Davide Clerici, head of the technical and production office. “Some customers come with a detailed drawing; others submit their locking system to us, and ask us to study an optimal solution. In both cases, our technical department analyses joints, spaces, dimensions and capacities to design the ideal hinge, in terms of functionality, performance and industrial cost.”
Speed is an essential competitive aspect: feasibility study and quotation are provided within 48 hours from the request, while concept-to-finished-product transition takes less than 60 days, including the prototyping phase. The wooden furniture sector remains the business’s historical heart: folding hinges, top hinges, concealed hinges, ball bearings, spring hinges, all of them find application in furniture, kitchens, and custom-made furnishings that are Italian excellence. But Valtoce’s production versatility has opened up a plurality of markets over the years: from electrical panels to industrial machinery, from systems for the mobility of people with disabilities to vending machines, from metal carpentry to boating, up to special components for the defence sector with thick hinges and large capacity.
If the hinge shape has remained apparently unchanged over time, materials and production processes have greatly changed. Today’s steels are stronger, flex under load, avoiding breaking, and return to their original position once unloaded. The latest generation of laser cutting technologies allows for processing metal sheets up to 5 mm thick for heavy-duty hinges. The result is a product that combines traditional craftsmanship with industrial precision, a balance that only over a century of experience can guarantee.
