The Changing Store. And Milano Home Looks to the Retail of Tomorrow

22 October 2026

Milano Home, returne to Fiera Milano from 21 to 24 January 2027

For many years, the home furnishings and accessories store was a place to go in search of a product. Today, increasingly, it is a place to go in search of an idea.

This is far from a marginal change. Consumers enter a store expecting quality and expertise, but also inspiration, discovery and a story. Categories are becoming increasingly intertwined, assortments more personal, and the boundaries between home, lifestyle and design increasingly blurred. For a store to remain relevant, it must learn to interpret all of this.

This is precisely the transformation at the heart of Milano Home, returning to Fiera Milano from 21 to 24 January 2027 with a proposition built around the needs of specialised retail. Not simply a snapshot of what the home market has to offer, but a perspective on how that offer can be selected, interpreted and transformed into an experience. Because today, even deciding what to put in a shop window means taking a position.

From this perspective, the search for original, high-quality products becomes one of the key competitive advantages of a store. And the ability to create a distinctive assortment also depends on bringing different worlds together: lighting, decoration, accessories, textiles, fragrances, design and giftware all contribute to defining the atmosphere of a space and, consequently, the identity of a store. Milano Home brings this complexity together through four experiential areas. Mood explores decoration and handcrafted objects; Vibes brings together fragrances, textiles, florals and decoration; Wow broadens the perspective to include design, accessories, excellence in craftsmanship, gifts, pet design and stationery; while Taste focuses on tableware, kitchen and conviviality.

Four different worlds designed to help retailers read the market not simply through categories, but through atmospheres, lifestyles and occasions.

Alongside the product offering, the exhibition showcases a selection of projects highlighting the value of research and product culture. Manifatture in Scena, curated by architect Ulderico Lepreri, explores the dialogue between tradition and innovation within leading European manufacturers. Nove Botteghe, created in collaboration with gumdesign, explores materials and craftsmanship through the working of stone. Agora 4.0, conceived by Marco Merola, once again presents the workshop as a contemporary space where craftsmanship, design and experimentation can coexist.

These experiences also offer an important perspective for the lighting sector. In a market where products are increasingly accessible and easy to compare, what makes the difference is the ability to create a context. Telling the story of a lamp, an accessory or an object is no longer simply about describing its features and performance. It means placing it within a broader narrative made of materials, atmospheres, design culture and lifestyles.

The search for new business opportunities also requires retailers to move beyond traditional boundaries. Bau House, dedicated to pet design, GourMeet, focused on gourmet food and hospitality, and Christmas Preview, a new feature of the 2027 edition dedicated to the world of Christmas, explore segments capable of expanding retail offerings and generating new purchasing opportunities. Perhaps the most interesting change, however, concerns the relationship between the exhibition and its professional community. Milano Home is building a journey that begins well before January, through a roadshow across Italy and Europe and direct dialogue with retailers.

This is complemented by Milano Home+, the digital platform dedicated to business stories, data, analysis, trends and tools for the retail environment.

The goal is to create an ongoing relationship, transforming the exhibition from an annual event into a permanent space for exchange and dialogue.

At the heart of this journey is also the Milano Home Manifesto for the Future of the Independent Store, developed by listening to Italian and European retailers and distilled into five key concepts: Identity, Vital Relationships, Hyper-Competence, Connection and Hybridisation.

Five concepts that capture a transformation already underway. The store of the future will not necessarily be bigger, but it will need to be more recognisable. It will not necessarily sell more products, but it will need to select them more carefully. Above all, it will have to offer something that online alone cannot replicate: an experience, expertise and a relationship.

This is where Milano Home 2027 aims to position itself: not simply as a place to discover what the market has to offer, but as a place to understand what the market may be asking for tomorrow.
