In the Municipality of Gabicce Mare (Italy), S.M.E. led a major energy efficiency project in collaboration with HERA LUCE, which involved replacing 1,875 lighting fixtures out of a total of 2,624, while maintaining the original pole structures. This project brought about a significant renewal of the street lighting system, integrating new high-efficiency LED luminaires that enhance the urban landscape and improve environmental sustainability.
Previously, the average power consumption per fixture was 89.61 Watts, with an annual energy usage of 795,004.96 kWh over 4,200 hours of operation. Thanks to the new LED technology, the average power per fixture dropped to 31.95 Watts, reducing annual consumption to 344,447.79 kWh, without changing the number of lighting points.
The project also included the introduction of automatic power reduction profiles (virtual midnight) with dual settings: Profile 1 (6-hour reduction) and Profile 2 (8-hour reduction). In terms of installed power, there was a 64.34% decrease, from 235,139 Watts to a total of 83,839 Watts. From an environmental perspective, the project enables an annual saving of 84.26 TOE (Tons of Oil Equivalent) and a reduction in CO₂ emissions of 186.08 tons, making a tangible contribution to decarbonization and sustainability goals. From an economic standpoint, the project required an investment of €709,432, excluding technical expenses, which will be quickly offset thanks to the drastic reduction in energy consumption and the extended lifespan of the LED fixtures.
The redevelopment brought significant benefits in both energy efficiency and lighting quality, making the streets safer, more welcoming, and more functional for residents and visitors alike.
