The intersection of rigour and poetry
The Design Pinetum exhibition, at Villa Gaeta (Moncioni, Arezzo), is now in its tenth edition and, for the occasion, saw the involvement of young emerging talents. It is in this team that the meeting between the young designer Enea Colombo and Luce5 took place.
From the virtuous collaboration, Boolean. A synthesis of formal language and poetry, which testifies to the ability of the leading company in lighting design to transform the intuition of artists and designers into design reality, through technical expertise, innovative materials and craftsmanship sensitivity. In this process, Luce5 acts as a bridge between idea and experience, enhancing the dialogue between innovation and creativity.
Boolean comes to life from the idea of an intersection between a spherical solid and a plane: a geometric gesture that becomes a visual metaphor for the relationship between full and empty, between presence and absence. In this dialogue, light takes on a primary role, transforming matter, space and shadow into project elements. Design, therefore, is not just a technical achievement, but a story – as Colombo says: “I started from the Freedom concept (the theme chosen by the curators of the event) and associated it with light. This is how Boolean was born, which I imagined as a travel companion and guide to discover the beauty of the Pinetum … A lantern that follows you inside the park with its formal and clean language, but able to create a sculptural dimension.”
During the exploratory phase at Villa Gaeta, Colombo was deeply influenced by the wild and contemplative nature of the place and wanted to create a small short circuit, associating a linear symmetrical element with the landscape. Two concepts that are placed in the grandeur of the place “become calm and breath”.
The reduced thicknesses, the material balances and the luminous power of the HYLEtech technology declined in the compositions designed by Emanuel Gargano and exhibited at the Triennale during the last Milan Design Week were a source of inspiration, allowing Colombo the possibility of imagining an “essential” balance, reduced to pure shapes.
Luce5 has interpreted this design stimulus by translating it into an object with essential lines, but sculptural at the same time, preserving the aesthetic elements and the cleanliness of the original concept.
Inserted as a remarkable piece of the mosaic of Design Pinetum, Boolean by Enea Colombo stands out for its autonomous character and the strength of its visual language. But it is also a manifesto of the possible work between company and designer: a path in which technology dialogues with art and becomes a tool of expression.
Enea Gianfranco Colombo (b. 1994) is a product and industrial designer, graduated laude in Integrated Product Design from the Politecnico di Milano. After international training courses, including at KADK in Copenhagen and collaborations with established European studios, in his work, he intertwines geometric rigour, material experimentation and relationship with the context. His approach ranges from lighting design to urban products, always aimed at reinterpreting the relationship between form, function and perception.
